Conscript’s child allowance set to increase
On the proposal of the Minister of Defence, the Government decided today to raise conscript’s child allowance to EUR 300 per month starting in 2019.
Minister of Defence Jüri Luik stated that it is reasonable on the part of the state to offer adequate support for those citizens who have been called on to contribute to the country’s military defence. ‘By updating the sum of the child allowance we are demonstrating caring and responsibility, while at the same time providing peace of mind to many conscripts and their families,’ said Luik.
Child allowance is paid in addition to the conscript’s monthly support, which is between EUR 100 and EUR 200 per month, depending on the duration of service. Thus far, a conscript’s child allowance had been EUR 50 per month.
When raising conscript’s child allowance the amount of support prescribed in the Family Law Act has been followed, according to which the monthly support payment for one child shall not be less than half of the minimum monthly wage established by the Government of the Republic. The current minimum wage is EUR 500, therefore the minimum monthly support payment is EUR 250.
Over a period of five years, conscript’s child allowance is received by an average of 60 children, although there have been some years where the number of recipients has also been below 30. This year, support has been paid to 48 children.
Conscript’s child allowance is regulated by the Government of the Republic Regulation ‘The extent and procedure for the payment of support for conscripts and persons in alternative service, the support paid to reservists for participating in reservist training, and the extent and payment of conscript’s child allowance or child allowance for a person in alternative service’.
