On Monday, five members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who were injured in combat action arrived in Estonia for medical rehabilitation; another five will reportedly arrive in December.
Medical rehabilitation will be provided to the injured over the course of 21 days at the Seli Health Centre run by the Ministry of Defence.
Defence Minister Hannes Hanso says Estonia will continue to render assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine within our capacities. “Medical rehabilitation to those injured in combat action is one of the areas in which we are on hand to help Ukraine. We do hope, however, that the effective armistice in eastern Ukraine will hold so we may focus on building peacetime cooperation,” Hanso noted.
The total cost of the rehabilitation programme for the injured Ukrainian servicemen is approximately 20 000 euros, which will be drawn from the budget of the Ministry of Defence.
In the autumn last year, a total of 11 Ukrainian citizens injured during combat action received treatment at hospitals in Estonia.
The main function of the Seli Health Centre is to organise out-patient medical rehabilitation and physiotherapy for members of the Defence Forces whose health has been damaged due to the performance of their service duties and for the family members of servicemen who have fallen or whose health has been permanently damaged due to participation in international military operations.
