Minister of Defence Jüri Luik met with Ursula von der Leyen, Germany’s Minister of Defence, with whom he discussed the Russian attack against Ukrainian vessels on the Azov Sea.

Both ministers confirmed the seriousness of the situation. ‘Russia’s armed attack should not be underestimated. What occurred was not a mistake or merely an incident, and the threat should be viewed as real and serious,' emphasised Luik.

Also discussed at the meeting was the strengthening of the current NATO defence and deterrence posture, Baltic Air Policing and developments in European Union defence cooperation.

Germany has decided to join the Estonian-led EU defence cooperation project involving unmanned ground vehicles. In the opinion of Minister of Defence Luik, Germany’s decision to join lends weight to the project.

In addition, Estonian Minister of Defence Luik met with Jan Hecker, Angela Merkel’s foreign policy advisor, and participated in a panel at the Berlin Foreign Policy Forum, where Russia's global ambitions were analysed.

Estonia and Germany have enjoyed longstanding and close defence cooperation, extending from cooperation in capability development and procurements to education and training. German Air Force fighters are carrying out Air Policing in Estonia.

The Berlin Foreign Policy Forum is the largest and most important annual foreign policy conference organised annually in Berlin, with politicians, high-ranking state officials, experts and journalists from Europe, the Middle-East, Asia and the United States all taking part.
