Within the framework of the Munich Security Conference, Minister of Defence Jüri Luik met with Tomohiro Yamamoto, State Minister of Defence for Japan.

Within the framework of the Munich Security Conference, Minister of Defence Jüri Luik met with the Slovenian Minister of Defence, the Japanese State Minister of Defence, and the EU Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs.

At their meeting, Elżbieta Bieńkowska, the EU Commissioner for the Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, and Jüri Luik focused on the topic of supporting defence related initiatives from the EU budget. ‘The next EU budget must definitely cover defence initiatives’, said Minister of Defence Luik. He emphasised that it was important to use the positive developments that have occurred within the framework of EU defence cooperation and to promote innovative technological solutions.

At the meeting, Tomohiro Yamamoto, State Minister of Defence for Japan, provided an overview of the security situation in the East-Asia region. The Ministers also discussed cyber cooperation between Estonia and Japan, and Jüri Luik welcomed the decision by Japan to join NATO’s Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, in Tallinn.

Luik met in Munich with Andreja Katic, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia, with whom he discussed preparations for the NATO Summit as well as bilateral defence related cooperation.  Slovenia has also expressed an interest in joining NATO’s Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, in Tallinn. In addition, Estonia and Slovenia are cooperating in the field of training. Slovenia is contributing in Latvia within the framework of NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence.
