Defence Minister Kalle Laanet visited Narva during a tour of Ida-Virumaa yesterday, where he met with the Defence League’s Narva unit and Narva’s mayor Katri Raik and deputy Sergei Goratš.

„The Defence League plays a central role in strengthening our national defence capability. Today visiting our armed forces, I can see how dedicated our members of the Defence Forces and Defence League are,“ said minister Laanet.

Laanet also visited the Narva Defence League unit, where he received an overview of their activities. The members of the Defence League shared their experience from last spring at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, when they assisted the Police and Border Guard force in patrolling the eastern border and provided information and masks to the local population.

During a meeting with Narva’s mayor Katri Raik, both agreed that Narva as a city on the border of NATO is of key importance to national defence.

„Estonia starts from Narva! It’s evident that we need to find opportunities to highlight the importance of national defence to the people of Narva. Starting from encouraging the youth to take part in the national defence curriculum in school to presenting them with career opportunities in the Estonian Defence forces,“ noted Laanet.
