Minister of Defence Luik at EU defence ministers meeting: ‘The European Union gave a strong boost to the development of the European defence industry’

Yesterday, during the EU Defence ministers video meeting, the EU commission presented a listed of projects which will receive funding from the European Defence Funds pilot programme.  Out of which 4 Estonian companies will receive a total of 10 million euros from the European budget. In addition, the EU defence ministers also discussed EU defence cooperation and the steps ahead.

‘It is positive to see how the plans agreed upon during the Estonian Presidency have materialised and the European Union has finally begun to actively invest into the European defence industry in order to develop Europe’s defence capabilities, also benefitting the Estonian defence industry, said Luik after the meeting.

Also discussed at the meeting of defence ministers was how to strengthen the Union’s operational capabilities, the future of EU defence initiatives and defence budgets. Minister of Defence Luik emphasised that compromises cannot be made in defence expenditures due to economic pressure, since the threats we are facing have not changed. In addition, the Minister of Defence pointed out that investments into defence play an important role in restarting the economy.

‘Building a credible European defence posture is impossible without the necessary investments; the question cannot be how much defence budgets should be cut, but by how much they need to be increased in order to achieve our level of ambition’.

During the Estonian Presidency of the EU council in 2017, European defence policy action plans were adopted, with one key component being the European Defence Fund. During the course of 10 years, the European Defence Fund will invest over 8 billion euros into European defence industry to bolster European defence capabilities. In the pilot programme of the European Defence Fund, Estonia is one of seven countries whose company is in charge of a defence industry consortium.
