A health centre is located in the Seli estate, where since 1993 rehabilitation treatment has been provided for fighters for freedom and regular members of the Defence Forces. In 1995, the Ministry of Defence returned the illegally transferred Seli estate to its legal successor: the Estonian Red Cross Society. In 1997, MOD and the Estonian Red Cross Society concluded an agreement for loan of use of the Seli estate for 25 years.
MOD has renovated the manor house and adjacent buildings according to the requirements of the Heritage Conservation Inspectorate.
The purchase of the Seli estate will enable MOD to plan larger investments and renovation works for the estate, to improve accommodation conditions and offer additional medical treatments, as well as construct a swimming pool, gym, and sports grounds.
In addition to redeployed members of the Defence Forces returning from international military operations, also fighters for freedom, members of the Defence League, and regular members of the Defence Forces receive rehabilitation treatment at the Seli Health Centre. The main function of the Seli Health Centre is to arrange rehabilitation treatment for redeployed members of the Defence Forces. In comparison with regular sanatoriums and rehabilitation centres, the Seli Health Centre offers better and more effective treatment for the military; both from the medical point of view as well as providing special psychological and chaplain services.
Historical background:
The present Seli manor house was built approximately in 1870, whilst manor houses have been located on these premises since the 13th century. The Seli manor house has been used as a treatment facility since 1919, when the estate was expropriated and transferred to the Estonian Red Cross Society, where treatment was given to soldiers of the War of Independence who had become invalids or sick. During the Russian occupation, the Seli manor house functioned as a hospital for TB patients, Rapla outpatient treatment facility, and rehabilitation treatment hospital for veterans of war. From 1993, members of the Estonian Fighters for Freedom have been receiving sanatorium and rehabilitation treatment in the Seli manor house.
