On 10 June at the Estonian War Museum, Minister of Defence Kalle Laanet awarded nearly 140 people for their significant contributions to national defence. The Minister of Defence announced the recipients of the recognition already at the beginning of December 2021; however, due to Covid-19 the presentation of the awards was postponed until this summer.
“Estonia’s national defence has undergone an incredible leap in development over the last quarter of a century, but especially in recent years. It is especially clear today how necessary this has been and we understand that we will have to make an even greater effort in the future,” Minister of Defence Kalle Laanet said in his speech.
“Russia’s barbaric war in Ukraine continues for the fourth month, and security threats and risks are unfortunately increasing. The threat horizon, during which we must be ready to defend ourselves at any given time and with all of our own forces and those of our allies, is inevitably moving forward,” said Minister of Defence Laanet.
The Minister of Defence added that thousands of servicemen from the Defence Forces, members of the Defence League, reservists, officials and specialists, and cooperation partners from the public and private sector, are responsible for the success story of Estonia’s national defence. “The Ministry of Defence has recognised hundreds of people, who have contributed to building independent defence capability, achieving NATO membership and strengthening allied relations. We value the efforts, dedication and professional skills of all medal recipients very highly,” said Laanet.
The minister handed out awards and letters of appreciation for exemplary work in the following areas: defence planning, defence cooperation with Allies, volunteering in the activities of the Defence League, leading debates on national defence issues, participation in international operations, cyber security, capability development, information technology and infrastructure development.
