Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur met in Tallinn with NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR), Royal Air Force Air Marshal Sir Johnny Stringer, to discuss strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defence posture, enhancing air and missile defence, and preparations for the Ankara summit taking place in July.

“At the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, we expect clear progress from Allies on meeting capability targets, increasing defence spending, and advancing the defence industry. NATO must ensure credible deterrence and defence across the entire Alliance territory, because in the end we all share the same goal – to prevent war by deterring the adversary and making aggression impossible,” Pevkur said.

The Minister noted, that United States is an important strategic ally, but it is evident that Europe must assume greater responsibility for its own defence.

The meeting also addressed responses to air threats and the need to increase the necessary capabilities. “Last week’s incident, where a drone was shot down by Allies in Estonian airspace, clearly demonstrates that Allies are cooperating effectively and that we are jointly protecting NATO territory as a whole,” Pevkur added.

“We know that drones entering Estonian airspace are a direct consequence of Russia’s aggression. Russia is the greatest threat to the entire Alliance and will remain so even if the war in Ukraine were to end. Therefore, it is vital that our support for Ukraine remains steadfast and that peace can be achieved only on Ukraine’s terms and with clear security guarantees,” the Minister said.
