Estonian Ministry of Defence launches Cyber Security Training Centre

Today, Cyber Security Exercises and Training Centre CR14 started its operations in Estonia.  The Centre will operate under the Ministry of Defence and serve the needs of the Estonian Defence Forces and NATO´s Cyber Range as well as Allies and Partners.

At the opening of the Cyber Security Exercises and Training Centre, Minister of Defence Jüri Luik said that as the activities in the cyber field have become one of NATO's core tasks they must enhanced.

‘As an Alliance, NATO has recently taken a significant step forward in promoting cyber deterrence. By developing a cyber range and also establishing a training centre, Estonia is making a prominent contribution toward enhancing the capabilities of the entire Alliance,” Minister of Defence Luik said.

The premises of the former TalTech IT College are now equipped for training in the cyber defence as well as are ready to serve the needs of the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, NATO structural elements and partners. The Centre will enable continuous international cyber defence training to take place and to develop cooperation between private companies in the field of cyber defence as well as with the academic institutions.

In the near future, cyber defence training equipment belonging to the Defence Forces will also be installed in the Centre’s premises. The Cyber Range is a system capable of imitating the functioning of a complex computer network and providing the opportunity to practice various cyber operations without endangering regular computer networks.

The Estonian and NATO´s cyber range has been used for various exercises, in which more than 5000 people from more than 30 countries have participated.

Additional cyber range for classified information is currently under development.
