“Latvia is an ally with whom we share a common history, a similar understanding of our security environment, and unwavering support for Ukraine. As neighbours, we also have many common tasks. Both Estonia and Latvia attach great importance to developing the Baltic Defence Line and strengthening security in the Baltic Sea region,” said Minister of Defence Herem.
“From this year onwards, we are also linked by the 1st German-Netherlands Corps, which has assumed tactical command of the Estonian and Latvian land forces. It is in our interest to work closely together to ensure that the Corps can focus on what matters most – being ready to act as soon as the need arises,” the minister added.
Herem also highlighted the Eastern Flank Watch initiative, a joint defence project established under the leadership of Finland and Poland. Estonia is leading efforts related to military mobility, while Latvia is responsible for counter-drone activities.
“As countries on Europe’s eastern border, we face greater security risks and bear greater responsibility. Contributing to Eastern Flank Watch offers other member states a valuable opportunity to help share this burden. We hope that sufficient funding will be allocated to the project so that we can make rapid progress with its implementation,” Herem said.
The meeting also addressed the strengthening of air defence, enhancing society’s crisis preparedness, hybrid threats and responses to them, as well as the challenges posed by irregular migration pressure on Latvia. The ministers also discussed continued support for Ukraine and the development of defence industry cooperation with Ukraine.
