The Secretary General stated that regardless of the next steps that Russia takes against Ukraine, the security situation in Europe has changed significantly. Russia has tried to force Ukraine to change its international course and NATO to change the defence of its allies.
It was jointly agreed that NATO should increase funding to meet collective defence needs.
“In order to meet the needs of collective defence, Estonia has extraordinarily increased its defence spending, directing an additional EUR 340 million to fill the most important gaps. In 2022, Estonia’s contribution will surpass 2.33%,” explained Minister of Defence Laanet. “We consider strengthening NATO’s eastern flank and the increased presence of Allies on the eastern flank to be of the utmost importance. We are grateful to the UK for its decision to double its presence in Estonia,” he added.
The decision to strengthen NATO forces has already been made by the United Kingdom, which will result in a doubling of its presence in Estonia, due to be carried out in the immediate future.
The long-term adaptation of NATO’s deterrence and defence posture must take into account the challenges presented by a fundamentally changed security situation.
